Evans Funeral Home, Ltd. was founded on April 1, 1964, by the late Mr. Estes Evans, Sr., the patriarch of the Evans Family, and his wife, Burnerdean.

Mr. Estes Evans, a 1958 graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science, excelled in the field and thus, set out to humbly serve bereaved families.

Located at 6451-53 South Ashland Avenue, a neighborhood staple on Chicago’s Southwest Side, this husband/ wife team and parents of six, ensconced a Christian, respectable, family-owned, and community-based, death care business.

Aspiring to plant roots for a “family” business, Mr. Evans yearned for his offspring to take an active role in the family’s business. Accordingly, in 1972, the family business was joined by their firstborn and eldest son, Otho “Mike,” who was also a graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science.

Six years later, in 1978, continuing the family tradition, the establishment was joined by the youngest daughter, and fifth child, Doris, also a graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science.

Believing in their hearts that everyone deserves a respectable and dignified “celebration of life,” “A Service For All” became their motto, and for over fifty (50) years, the Evans family has resolved to offer just such service. In 1979, in its pursuit to continue providing excellence in funeral service, the firm experienced an expansion and renovated to include a spacious chapel and viewing rooms.

With the death of Mr. Evans, Sr. in 1993, his son, Otho in 2009, and his widow, Burnerdean in 2011, the remaining children and capable staff, continue to operate the family business along with Mr. Evans’ brothers, Rev. Clay Evans, and Rev. Pharis Evans, who also served as staff chaplains and spiritual advisors. Upon entering the doors of Evans Funeral Home, clientele is greeted by a “family” member, the arrangement consultation is conducted with a “family” member, and a “family” member is present to serve you on the day of your service, to personally assist you in the bereavement process.

Today, it remains the goal and commitment of the Evans Funeral Home, to continue the legacy of providing complete satisfaction in funeral service. Our staff stands ready to service every significant detail of your funeral service needs.
